The English didn’t just win the battle. They shattered a fleet—and a kingdom’s pride.

On June 24, 1340, the English Channel ran red.

It was the Battle of Sluys—the first great naval clash of the Hundred Years’ War—and the stakes couldn’t have been higher. King Edward III of England, determined to assert his claim to the French throne, personally led a fleet of 120 to 150 ships toward the Flemish coast. There, at anchor in the harbor near Sluys, waited the French fleet—over 200 ships, chained together in a wall of oak and steel under the command of Hugues Quiéret and Nicolas Béhuchet.

The French had planned to block Edward’s crossing. Instead, they walked into a storm.

The English came at them with the wind at their backs and longbowmen in their sails. They maneuvered nimbly between the hulking mass of bound French vessels, boarding ship after ship in brutal close combat. The sea became a charnel house. When it was over, up to 20,000 French sailors lay dead—a staggering loss. The English captured most of the fleet, utterly breaking French naval power in the Channel.

Edward had won more than a battle—he had opened the gateway into France.

But back in Paris, King Philip VI couldn’t bring himself to believe it. A sea defeat of this magnitude? Impossible.

So his jester, ever the sharpest mind in the court, delivered the bitter truth wrapped in satire. "The English are such cowards," he quipped, “they didn’t even dare jump into the water like our brave Frenchmen.”

A joke that cut like a blade.

Though Edward’s subsequent siege of Tournai would falter, the Battle of Sluys marked the beginning of England’s naval dominance—a maritime shadow that would linger for centuries.

And on that summer day in 1340, the tides of war were not just turned—they were conquered.
